Syncopation: Contemporary encounters with the Modern Masters

This is the first contemporary art exhibition at the Pola Museum of Art, which previously had focused on exhibiting its own collection of the 19th century western paintings and modern Japanese paintings. This exhibition showcased the museum’s diverse collection of paintings, sculptures, and crafts, along with works by contemporary artists. It was therefore necessary to create exhibition and construction methods which were completely new to the museum instead of using conventional methods they had been accustomed to, including the construction method using movable partitions and the lighting method mainly using spotlights. We carefully studied the sizes and the viewing sequence of the contemporary art works expressed using different methods including sound, film, and installation, as well as the works of the great masters of the 19th and 20th centuries, and placed them in such a way that they corresponded with the scale and proportion of respective rooms.
