The project involved several changes to the existing settings: adding an office measuring less than 4㎡,using part of the parking lot and the space under the stairs; insulating and updating the bathroom and bathroom fittings; installing double-glazed windows in the living room and replacing fixtures to allow light into the narrow hallway; renovating the kitchen; organizing bookshelves in the hallway; and removing the fence and pergola around the parking space. In other words, we “tuned up” theliving space to which the family has grown so accustomed physically and spiritually, updating it in a way that they can live more comfortably. We did it into two phases.Since architecture is like a mathematical function involving various factors such as the client, site, budget, materials, functions, structure/facilities, light/heat/wind, city, and time, the list of things to consider is extensive, and the priorities change constantly. Several critical issues, such as the balance between household duties and work, a new environment for small children, and how to bring the maximum amount of light through limited openings, determined the arrangement of these factors in this project. This function involving fragmentary but overarching factors generates a unique image superimposed on a nearly forty-year-old prefabricated modular house.
