Hachinohe Art Museum

Hachinohe has a profound culture deeply rooted in the local customs and folk traditions, and the city is blessed with unique and beautiful landscapes. While there are various cultural facilities including the Hachinohe Portal Museum Hacchi, Hachinohe Book Center, and the Hachinohe City Public Hall,  they have not developed any professional collaborative relationships among themselves. Our idea was that the new museum should make full use of a high level of professional expertise in researching, analyzing and comparing cultural resources, observing similarities and differences with cultural heritage in neighboring cities, connecting and evaluate them from a new viewpoint, and it should be serve as an education hub or a learning center where citizens can learn about professional research processes from experts and both parties can mutually exchange knowledge and ideas. We thought that this is exactly the kind of role public facilities should play.

This museum consists of clusters of small rooms where citizens can learn about and gain deep knowledge in different fields of expertise, and an enormous room where those who teach and those who learn share the same space and interact with one another. The clusters of small rooms contain different types of rooms designed for various activities including “white-cube” rooms for special exhibitions, “black-cube” rooms for video and film exhibitions, studios for artists, ateliers for citizens among others.  On the other hand, the enormous room is an extremely large open space  where various functions including the entrance, event and lecture spaces, project room used for preparatory work for exhibitions among others co-exist. By combining these functions, the new museum, instead of serving as a conventional museum focused solely on exhibitions, becomes a place where all those involved, while occasionally swapping roles, collaborate in driving projects forward through teaching and learning experiences, experiments and implementations.
